Children Ages 12 and Under Residential Treatment Programs and Schools

"Feelings are much like waves, we can’t stop them from coming but we can choose which one to surf.
"
---Jonatan Martensson

Placing a child in a treatment program is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions a parent has to make.

When you are researching treatment options for your struggling child, this is a very emotional time for you and your family.

These programs are basically small boys and girls boarding schools ranging in about twenty five to forty students who reside in home-like settings.

The mission is to educate the whole child as it is believed that every moment of every day presents a teaching possibility for these young children. Most provide outstanding academic and therapeutic services to these children and their families.

Strong family involvement is recommended. This is encouraged through family therapy, frequent visits and telephone calls.

Extracurricular Activities may include badminton, basketball, cross-country skiing/snowboarding, flag football, golf, judo, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball. Other program activities may also include 4H, hiking/camping, fishing, gardening, Horseback riding, rafting, and weekend trips. A 1:4 staff to student ratio is normal for these programs.

Many of these programs specialize in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or other co-existing conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, Asperger’s, bipolar, mild depression, OCD, ODD, PTSD, Tourette’s, and specific learning disabilities.

Many of these young students have the feeling that they are incapable of learning, even though they are very bright. Some can feel isolated in a traditional educational system, experience frustration and “act-out” accordingly. For this reason these programs focus on developing a students’ self-esteem, self-confidence and sense of safety, while working to increase their academic skills.

What is the tuition?

On average the annual tuition for a nine-month boarding school program for children this age is $54,000.00. The tuition for the six-week summer program is approximately $8,000. Specialties such as psychotherapy, speech and language therapy, etc. are billed separately at an average cost of $85.00 per hour.

Other boarding school programs are year-round and last between 18 and 24 months. The average tuition for a year-round program is between $55,000.00 and $100,000.00, and most times this is all inclusive.

Student Loans are an attractive option for parents considering private secondary education for their children. Financing your child's education with student loans can allow you to make low monthly payments over a period of time.
