This gives us the ability to assist with a student assessment in what may be the best next step.

We are dedicated to helping your adolescent or young adult be as well-prepared as possible for their next step. Part of our process includes working with student's to make sure that their next step is a good fit for them and their needed success. We know first hand how important this decision is emotionally as well as financially.

Horizon Family Solutions works with many families who choose not to use the full services of an Educational Consultant, and instead use the option of a Student Assessment Consultant.

How to Know when Your Child Needs Residential Treatment

"Challenging is an Understatement"
Many of you are coping with kids who exhibit challenging behaviors.

Despite the headaches of parenting; you as parents want to do everything that you possibly can to help your child. When is enough, just that, enough? One of the most difficult and heartbreaking decisions a family can make is to decide that residential treatment is needed for their child.

How you come to that decision depends on several factors. A number of conditions must be considered in order to find appropriate treatment.

Most importantly, you must come to the realization that you cannot provide the intense treatment that your child needs.

Does My Child Need Residential Treatment?

"Red flag" behaviors and must be taken seriously.

  • Does your child accept responsibility for their actions?
  • Does your child have difficulties in the school setting?
  • Does your child isolate themselves from the family?
  • Does your child show excessive behaviors in the area of lying and stealing?
  • Does your child show remorse?
  • Do they have a diagnosis that seriously affects their ability to remain stable in the family environment?
  • Has your family exhausted all local resources, such as; behavior counseling and family therapy?
  • How are the behaviors affecting your family dynamics?
  • Is your child a runaway?
  • Is your child a threat to themselves or others?
  • Is your child cruel to animals?
  • Is your child in trouble with the law?
  • Is your child out of control?
  • Is your child overly interested in fires, gambling, video games or violence?
  • Is your child secretive or non-communicative?
  • Is your child self-abusive or expressed suicidal remarks?
  • Is your child using drugs and/or alcohol?
  • Is your child verbally or physically abusive?

Once a decision is made to seek residential treatment, a number of steps are taken to assure the best possible treatment and long term success.

Coping with Guilt

When you have reached this point; it is essential that you understand that treatment is the optimum option for your child. After struggling for so long with a difficult child; don't be surprised when you feel a sense of relief. It's not unusual to feel guilt or question your parenting skills.

This is a typical reaction; don't be afraid to express your feelings. Do talk to the therapist at your child's program and continue your therapy at home. Join a local support group or one through your child's program.

Most importantly, remember that your child's best interests are the primary focus of treatment.

How Do I Know Where My Adolescent or Young Adult Needs To Go After Their Wilderness Experience?

Many students will need to continue their treatment after wilderness.

There are many options ranging from aftercare programs, clinical boarding schools, emotional growth programs, residential treatment centers, therapeutic treatment centers or young adult transition programs.

Programs and schools which may be considered, or even an at-home transitional program are not the same in terms of degree of clinical focus, duration, philosophy and structure. Consistency in treatment, goals, and family work is essential as a next best step.

There are also four important categories of which may need to be addressed in a next placement.

They are behavioral, educational, medical and psychological. Our extensive and non biased student assessment provides recommendations for the type of continued treatment and support that will enhance the chances of a continued successful outcome.

How Do I Know Where My Adolescent or Young Adult Needs To Go for a Step-Down Program After Their One-One One Intensive Program?

When you have had to start with residential treatment for a youth who may have been hospitalized prior to treatment and/or was experiencing behavioral or emotional problems including depression and thought disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, and/or drug and alcohol abuse, it is often recommended that once stabilized and back on track that they encounter a step-down, less intensive program before returning home. A step-down residential program or transition program is designed for students who need a realistic transition before returning home to their families.

Students continue to receive therapeutic support throughout this placement and also are given extra privileges and opportunities to implement newfound therapeutic skills and self-management techniques.

Based on the age of your youth, there are several options to consider.

There are a range of next-step services recommended in this type of student assessment.

Bringing in someone from "the outside" can often result in greater clarity and increased options to deal with a question or a challenge regarding your adolescent's next steps.

This is a common concern. Also, HFS is in no way affiliated with any programs or schools nor any group of programs or schools and so our independent assessment is one of great non biased value. Our sole purpose is to serve your adolescent or young adult and your family.
